Great Big Kiss Podcast #41 - 4/9/16

Listen here - https://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-41/

A round-up of the vinyl I've bought to play at Great Big Kiss over the last few months. Kicking off with a 45 I've been after for a couple of years - "Can't You See (You're Losing Me)" by Mary Wells - we glide from irresistible northern soul - "By Yourself" by Jay D Martin, "Jeanette" by Wade Flemons, and "Your Personality" by Jackie Lee - to girl group brilliance - "Love Is The Only Answer" by The Lollipops and "In Your Spare Time" by Cindy Scott - and storming r&b - "I Can't Stand It" by The Soul Sisters and "Can't Chance A Break Up" by Ike & Tina Turner. We round off with two Yardbirds-related songs - "For Your Love" and Brenda Lee's version of "What'd I Say", featuring Jimmy Page - and then raise a cheer for the opening of the night tube, with "Night Train" by James Brown. All aboard!

Great Big Kiss Podcast #5 - 3/6/11

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-5/

At the start of this week, I won a job lot of fifty northern and 60s soul records on ebay. Some super famous songs, some northern soul classics, some 70s funk cuts, a handful of northern instrumentals and a bunch of songs that I'd been after for ages. This is a collection of 17 of those singles - mostly A-sides, but a few choice B-sides too.

Great Big Kiss Podcast #6 - 6/7/11

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-6/

We start and end this Great Big Kiss podcast with two songs that share the same backing track. Laura Greene's "Music, Moonlight And You" is probably the better known of the two, but my favourite - mostly for the way the melodramatic spoken intro sets up the song - is Frankie And The Classicals' "What Shall I Do?". Elsewhere, we have my favourite ever northern soul single - "Do It" by Pat Powdrill - and "Luci Baines" by The American Four, who were fronted by a youthful, pre-Love, Arthur Lee (in fact, this song was his debut vocal recording). Plus the usual mix of northern soul, girl groups and rock'n'roll.

Great Big Kiss Podcast #7 - 7/9/11

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-7/

Another foot-stomping mixture of northern soul and rock'n'roll. Highlights include sublime northern soul from Geno Washington, Joyce Bennett and The Velvet Satins, barn-storming r&b from Etta James, Prentice Moreland and Smiley Lewis, the almost indecently sexy Tame Me Tiger by Violet Vector And The Lovelies, Get Off Of My Cloud in Spanish (!), and the song that closed last month's Great Big Kiss, the glorious Be My Guest by Fats Domino.

Great Big Kiss Podcast #8 - 12/10/11

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-8/

This month's podcast brings together most of the vinyl bits and pieces that I've picked up from boot fairs, record shops and ebay over the past few months, plus some vinyl treats that were already in my collection. Some have already been aired at Great Big Kiss, some will be played for the first time this Friday. As always, it's a foot-stomping, hip-shaking collection of girl groups, northern soul and rock'n'roll.

Great Big Kiss Podcast #9 - 10/5/12

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-9/

Still buzzing from seeing the magnificent Dexys show at Shepherd's Bush Empire on Tuesday, we've decided to make this Great Big Kiss podcast a partial Dexys tribute, featuring three songs that the band covered in the 80s. Opener, "Breaking Down The Walls Of Heartache", was covered on the b-side of "Geno"; their version of "The Horse" graced the b-side of "There There My Dear"; and "Seven Days Too Long" was covered on "Searching For The Young Soul Rebels". Elsewhere, there's the usual mixture of northern soul, girl groups and r&b, with a raucous party tune from Link Wray thrown in to stir things up.

Great Big Kiss Podcast #10 - 14/9/12

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-10/

Another mixture of northern soul, girl groups, Motown and rock'n'roll, this time pulling together the pick of my vinyl purchases over the last three months.

Great Big Kiss Podcast #13 - 9/2/14

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-13/

At every Great Big Kiss, I take a few photos of the records played by the guest DJs, usually as a way of reminding myself of a brilliant song the morning after so I can go hunting for it myself. Here's a compilation of the singles I photographed in 2013. They were played by Debbie Smith, Jon Slade, Lucienne Cole, Bob Stanley, The Actionettes, Gary Day, The Action Men, Kev and Linda, and Declan Allen, although not necessarily in that order. See if you can work out which guest DJ played which song...

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-19/

This month, I treated myself to the vinyl box set of singles featured in the Elaine Constantine film, "Northern Soul". There's 14 singles and 28 tracks in all - this podcast is my pick of the bunch, a crisp 42 minute set featuring 16 of the 28 songs. As you might expect, it features classic after classic, from "Right Track" and "Gone With The Wind Is My Love" to "Just Say You're Wanted (And Needed)" and "Lonely For You Baby".

Great Big Kiss Podcast #20 - 2/1/15

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-20/

A round-up of the vinyl we've bought to play at the club over the last few months (and a few treats that were given to us by Santa!). There's our usual mixture of northern soul, 60s girl groups and rock'n'roll, with some 60s pop thrown in for good measure. We start and end with both sides of one storming single by Brenda Holloway. To begin, "Just Look What You've Done" (co-written by Frank WIlson and R Dean Taylor - now there's a writing credit!), and to finish up, "Starting The Hurt All Over Again". Not bad for a single 45!

Great Big Kiss Podcast #21 - 10/2/15

If there's one genre that knows all there is to know about love, it's soul music. From the giddy highs of first love to the pain of heartbreak, soul has soundtracked every conceivable affair of the heart and managed to find some joy in them all. So what better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than with the songs that have loved, lost and loved again. From "I'm Ready To Love" to "In Love" to "Love's Gone Bad" to "Someday We're Gonna Love Again", it's all here, an emotion in perfect motion.

Great Big Kiss Podcast #24 - 3/5/15

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-24/

I recently asked members of the Northern Soul forum on Facebook to recommend their favourite female vocal soul songs. The response was huge - hundreds of songs tipped, some that I know and love, many that were completely new to me. I'm still working my way through the links, but here's a podcast of my favourites so far. There's everything here, from classic northern soul and sublime girl group harmonies to storming r&b and a couple of songs with a funky spring in their step. My shopping list just got a lot longer, although I was pleased to discover that one of these songs - "What I Don't Know (Won't Hurt Me)" by Bettye Lavette - was lurking on the b-side of a single I own already.

Great Big Kiss Podcast #25 - 7/6/15

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-25/

Listen here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/great-big-kiss-podcast-26/

A round-up of the vinyl I've bought over the last few months to play at Great Big Kiss, with a few highlights from recent nights thrown in for good measure. I was very pleased to finally snare a copy of Susan Shifrin's storming version of "25 Miles", and to top up my collection of northern classics with original copies of "You Didn't Say A Word" and "Breakaway". Elsewhere, there's irresistible northern joy from The Four Tempos, one of my favourite lesser known songs by The Chiffons, some foot-stomping fuzz and attitude from Lulu, and two singles snapped up for 50p apiece at a boot fair in Surrey from a guy who was selling the records he used to play when he was a DJ - "You're Ready Now" by Frankie Valli and "Back In The USA" by Chuck Berry. Nice to think that these well-loved 45s will see more active service at Great Big Kiss!

Ahead of their guest DJ spot at this month's Great Big Kiss, I asked Astrid and Janine of London's legendary all-girl go-go dance troupe The Actionettes to put together a podcast of some of their favourite songs. The dynamic duo have come up with a super-danceable mix of northern soul, 60s girl groups, blue-eyed 60s pop, 50s r&b, and some Spanish pop (courtesy of Astrid, who's from Spain). We kick off with the brilliant "Goodbye Boys Goodbye" by Margie Mills, which is currently taking pride of place in The Actionettes' dance set, and keep on hip-shaking, hand-clapping and foot-stomping from then on!

My picks of the chart are "My Sugar Baby" by Connie Clark, "A Little Bit Hurt" by Julien Covey, "Crackin' Up Over You" by Roy Hamilton, and the brilliant, atmospheric instrumental "Bari Track", which turns even the most humble dancehall into a grand ballroom.

The latest instalment of our journey through the official northern soul top 500 finds us drifting blissfully into an hour of quiet classics. There are no huge, foot-stomping anthems here, but a run of incredible songs that harness a slowburning power to create those soulful dancefloor moments where the real world just seems to melt away. From The Impressions' "You've Been Cheatin'", propelled by the dreamlike falsetto of Curtis Mayfield, to "Run For Cover" by The Dells and "If I Could Only Be Sure" by Nolan Porter, this is northern soul at its purest - sensitive, serious and straight from the heart.
